From watches to Lombardi trophies: The Glazer family legacy

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers hold a special place in the hearts of many, whether you’re a long-time supporter or a newfound fan. A significant part of the team’s journey and success is attributed to the influence of the Glazer family.

In 1995, Malcolm Glazer made headlines by acquiring the Buccaneers for a then-unprecedented $192 million after the previous owner, Hugh Culverhouse, passed away the year prior. This pivotal acquisition marked the beginning of a transformative era for the franchise.

Glazer’s leadership ushered in a series of changes that rejuvenated the team’s image and operations. The Buccaneers swapped their traditional creamsicle uniforms for the now-iconic pewter color scheme. The game-day experience was revamped to be more engaging for fans, with numerous community events and activities enhancing the overall atmosphere. Additionally, the team transitioned from the old Tampa Stadium, affectionately known as the “Sombrero,” to the state-of-the-art Raymond James Stadium.

One of the Glazers’ crowning achievements came in 2003 when the Buccaneers clinched their first Super Bowl victory against the Oakland Raiders, cementing their legacy in the NFL.

Under Glazer’s direction, the team ditched the classic creamsicle jerseys for the current pewter colorway; games became more fan-friendly, with multiple community events and activities surrounding all the action; and the team also moved from the old Sombrero to Raymond James Stadium.

The Glazers were also at the helm when the team won its first Super Bowl against the Raiders in 2003.

While Glazer died from a stroke in 2014, his legacy now lives in the form of his six children, all of which still own the team to this day.

News Channel 8’s Aileen Hnatiuk reports on the Glazer family’s humble beginnings and how they leveraged that into the dynasty Bucs fans know and love today.
