SAVANNAH, Ga. () – Eleven forty-foot boxes of furniture are now in the hands of Family Promise of the Coastal Empire to help families in need.

News 3’s Nakya Harris spoke to the organization about the 2,600 pieces of furniture that were donated.

“I received an email from one of our local logistics companies, IMC Logistics, regarding a shipment of brand-new furniture at the port that was at risk of being destroyed,” said Katrina Bostick, CEO of Family Promise of the Coastal Empire. “They contacted Family Promise to see if we would be interested in accepting this generous donation.”

She told it is a donation that benefits those that are experiencing homelessness and transitioning into permanent housing.

“…For families transitioning from any Family Promise program into permanent housing, who have completed the necessary educational classes, this furniture will be provided to assist other families in need,” Bostick explained.

She added, “We also know that families connected to us but not in our traditional programs will participate in a four-hour home management course.”

Families that are eligible also include those affected by last year’s storms, Tropical Storm Debby and Hurricane Helene.

“For those families that were flooded out, we know that when the storm hit and they started to rebuild, they did receive a lot of items. A lot of those items were donated. But this is an opportunity for us to maybe do some possible home makeovers for them and use this furniture as a way, again, to make their house a home.”

Bostick said she is watching policy changes on state and local levels.

“There has been some legislation that has impacted the families that we work with.  It’s our community in general, there is some legislation that is coming down that could also significantly impact our community if it is passed,” she said. “For us, we’re just looking at how we can prepare our families for good, bad or indifferent.”

To support the organization, they are asking individuals to attend the Red Hot Chili Pepper Run. All proceeds from the event go directly toward helping Family Promise of the Coastal Empire provide shelter, resources, and support to families experiencing homelessness.
