AUSTIN (KXAN) One person died in a crash between a vehicle and an Amtrak train in central Texas on Wednesday morning, according to authorities.
The Williamson County Sheriff’s Office announced on social media just before 11 a.m. about a “major accident involving an Amtrak Train and Vehicle.”
The crash took place near Round Rock, an area close to Austin. In an email statement, Amtrak mentioned the train was heading from San Antonio to Chicago when it “collided with a vehicle.”
A Union Pacific police officer informed affiliate KXAN that the accident occurred on Union Pacific property at a private crossing, and confirmed the death of one individual.
Amtrak reported that there were no initial injury reports among the 71 passengers and crew on the train. They stated their intention to cooperate with local law enforcement in investigating the incident.
Amtrak said the train was delayed at the scene.
The sheriff’s office mentioned in the post that the Texas Department of Public Safety was handling the accident. KXAN contacted the sheriff’s office and DPS for further details. The Hutto Police Department informed KXAN that its officers were also assisting with the situation.
