MASCOT, Tenn. (WATE) — Court filings reveal that an FBI agent is confronted with multiple charges, including DUI, fleeing an accident scene, property damage, and resisting arrest, after an incident in Knox County.

Late Sunday night at approximately 11:35 p.m., a law enforcement officer was dispatched to Trout Road following a report of an accident on Shipe Road that resulted in damage to a mailbox, as stated in court documents. Upon arrival, the officer encountered Mark James Stephenson, who reportedly had an alcohol odor and claimed that his vehicle was crashed by two friends who then fled, according to the records.

The warrant indicates a witness informed the officer that Stephenson admitted to crashing further down the roadway. When the officer attempted to read Stephenson his rights, Stephenson reportedly became agitated and declared he was an FBI federal agent, which a witness corroborated for the officer.

The officer tried to put Stephenson in handcuffs, but he resisted for several minutes before submitting, according to court records. After getting a search warrant, keys to the crashed truck were found on Stephenson’s person, court records showed.

When asked to confirm Stephenson’s employment, the FBI said, “As a standard practice, the FBI doesn’t confirm employment.”
