() Harrison Ruffin Tyler, the last living grandson of 10th U.S. President John Tyler, has died at the age of 96.

Tyler’s family said he died Sunday evening. John Tyler was 63 years old when Harrison Tyler’s father, Lyon Gardiner Tyler Sr., was born. Harrison Ruffin Tyler was born in 1928, 83 years after President Tyler left the White House in 1845.

Harrison Tyler was known for preserving his grandfather’s home, Sherwood Forest Plantation, and Fort Pocahontas, a nearby Civil War fort.

“He will be remembered for his considerable charm, generosity and unfailing good humor by all who knew him,” Annique Dunning, executive director of Sherwood Forest, said in a statement.

John Tyler was nicknamed the “accidental president” after assuming the presidency upon the death of President William Henry Harrison while in office. Tyler was the first vice president to take over the White House in the wake of a death.
