FLAGLER COUNTY, Fla. – In a troubling incident, a home health aide in Flagler County has been charged with stealing money and a debit card from an elderly client under her care, as reported by the local sheriff’s office.
Katie Swain, aged 32, was taken into custody on December 31 following an investigation that spanned several weeks.
The investigation began when a senior resident at HarborChase of Palm Coast reported his wallet missing, which contained cash and a debit card. Authorities identified Swain, a recent employee at the facility, as the caregiver assigned to the victim on the day of the theft.

According to the sheriff’s office, unauthorized transactions occurred in Putnam County, close to where Swain resides. She allegedly used the victim’s card to purchase gas, snacks, groceries, and also made online transactions.
“Security footage from the store captured Swain using the stolen debit card for numerous purchases. Altogether, she conducted $664.02 in unauthorized transactions with the card and took $30 in cash,” the sheriff’s office detailed.
Swain faces charges of fraudulent use of personal identification information and grand theft from a person over 65 years of age.
“This woman abused her position of trust and authority as a home health aide for gas, donuts and trinkets,” Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly said in a release.
Swain was taken to Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility, where she was later released on a $10,000 bond.
