TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Though the Florida House and Senate are separated by merely a few hundred feet, they face a daunting chasm of $1.4 billion in their budget negotiations. This considerable gap underscores the challenge ahead for lawmakers in both chambers.
As the regular legislative session concluded on Friday, it became evident that the House and Senate would adjourn Sine Die without reaching a budget agreement. This decision ensures that legislators will need to reconvene in Tallahassee for a special session to tackle the unresolved fiscal issues.
The budgetary stalemate is not the only pressing matter on the legislative agenda. Lawmakers are already juggling a busy schedule that includes addressing property tax reform and undertaking the mid-decade redrawing of Florida’s congressional districts.
Reflecting on last year’s legislative calendar, the session was extended from spring into summer, culminating in the passage of the budget on June 16th, a substantial 105 days after the session’s commencement. This history hints at the potential timeline lawmakers might face again.
While property tax reforms and redistricting are significant, they are not bound by the same urgency as the budget, which legally needs to be finalized by July 1.
