ORLANDO, Fla. – In a push towards modernization, a Florida official is advocating for the removal of the state’s traditional yellow registration decal. This initiative, described as a “sensible step forward,” promises to save millions for residents while updating the system to match current technological capabilities.
On Wednesday, Miami-Dade County Tax Collector Dariel Fernandez unveiled a proposal urging the Florida Legislature and the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles to eliminate the yearly sticker requirement. He clarified that the proposal targets only the physical decal, not the vehicle registration process itself.
“The yellow decal is outdated,” Fernandez remarked. “It’s prone to fading, peeling, theft, and it’s a yearly expense for our residents. By removing it, we take a logical step that saves money, curbs fraud, and utilizes existing technology effectively.”
Fernandez pointed out that Miami-Dade residents could collectively save millions each year by cutting costs associated with the creation, distribution, and replacement of these decals. He highlighted that numerous states have already transitioned to digital verification systems, enabling law enforcement to check vehicle registration instantly.
Positioning the proposal as part of his commitment to modernize county operations and ease family burdens, Fernandez stated, “There’s no need for families to affix anything to their license plates when technology can verify registration instantly.”
This proposal is set to be discussed with state leaders, the Florida Tax Collectors Association, and various bipartisan partners throughout the state.
“Florida families deserve a smarter and more modern process,” Fernandez said. “Ending the physical yellow decal is a simple but powerful step in that direction.”
