GREENBELT, Md. (AP) — Former National Security Adviser John Bolton, who served under President Donald Trump, is facing charges in a federal probe over possible mishandling of classified information.
This investigation came to light in August when the FBI conducted searches at Bolton’s residence in Maryland and his office in Washington, seeking classified documents that he might have kept unlawfully.
Bolton’s lawyer has stated that many of the documents obtained during the search had already been cleared in a pre-publication review for his recent book.
The indictment handed down on Thursday signals the beginning of a legal battle involving a prominent figure in Republican foreign policy circles.
Bolton, who was dismissed from his position during Trump’s first term, has since become an outspoken critic of the former president.
