Georgia cracks down on animal abuse after major rescue operations

ATLANTA (WJBF) – Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Tyler Harper announced the state’s increased efforts to look into and take action against breaches of animal welfare related laws.

The Georgia Department of Agriculture, which includes its own state law enforcement body, is dedicated to safeguarding companion animals, livestock, and the food supply.

Recently, investigators managed to rescue 32 dogs from a home in northwest Georgia. Officials noted that the dogs were found in unsanitary outdoor conditions and within a dangerous structure, with many suffering from health issues and a lack of veterinary care.

“Most of what we find is a lack of care — not feeding the animals properly or providing the proper veterinary treatment,” said Harper.

This is the second significant rescue operation in the area within a month. In Dade County, authorities confiscated 256 animals and apprehended two individuals on felony abuse charges, with further charges potentially forthcoming.

Harper said the latest case remains under investigation, and charges will be filed once veterinary reports are complete.

To report incidents of animal cruelty, you can reach out to your local animal control or sheriff’s office, or file a report through the Georgia Department of Agriculture’s website.
