GoFundMe campaign for Pawleys Island drowning victim surpasses $209K

A GoFundMe campaign surpassing $209,000 has been launched for the family of a Georgia man who tragically lost his life in a drowning incident at Pawleys Island over the past weekend.

Anderson “Chase” Childers, who was 38, leaves behind three children. He had a diverse career, serving as a former police officer and a promising Major League Baseball talent with the Baltimore Orioles. Before his life ended, he demonstrated his bravery by rescuing several swimmers caught in distressing situations on July 13, only to be caught himself in a treacherous rip current.

“A loyal husband and father, he showed incredible bravery and selflessness. In an act of heroism, he saved a family of five who were facing danger at Pawleys Island on Sunday afternoon, prioritizing their safety over his own,” explains the GoFundMe page. “Heartbreakingly, after giving his all to protect them, he couldn’t remain above water as the rip tide pulled him under, making the ultimate sacrifice in the presence of his wife and three children.”

Childers’ sister-in-law Jordan created the fundraiser on July 15 with a goal of $200,000. As of Monday, it was at $209,549.

In addition to the fundraiser, Childers’ family launched an online petition asking for safety reforms on Georgetown County and Pawleys Island beaches, including:

  • Colored flag warning system
  • rip current and hazard signs at all access points
  • QR or URL codes linking to daily hazard updates
  • apps and text alerts
  • lifeguard stations

These measures will not only protect residents and visitors by improving awareness and response to dangerous water conditions, but they will stand as a lasting promise from local officials and authorities—a visible, daily reminder of the commitment of the Town of Pawley’s Island and Georgetown County in safeguarding every person who steps foot onto their beautiful beaches,” Childers’ aunt Susan Mitchell said.
