Gov. DeSantis to 'pull the plug' on H-1B visas at Florida schools

The ongoing debate surrounding H-1B visas in the United States has seen Florida Governor Ron DeSantis urging state universities to stop relying on these visas.

DeSantis contends that the visas, intended for attracting highly skilled workers to the U.S., are being misused. He claims that some Florida universities employ H-1B visas to fill roles like graphic designers in athletic departments and assistant swim coaches.

“Why aren’t we producing enough math and engineering graduates who can fill these positions? We have hundreds of thousands enrolled in our state university system,” DeSantis remarked. “I don’t see why such roles, like a $40,000 job in an athletic department, require specialized knowledge that only foreign workers can provide. This misuse completely undermines the original purpose of these visas.”
