GREENEVILLE, Tenn. (WJHL) — A man was found guilty of murdering his five-week-old daughter in Greeneville in February 2020.

Lavelle Scott was declared guilty by the Greene County Criminal Court on Wednesday for first-degree murder in the case of his daughter, Sophia Flora Fields.

He was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole on the murder charge.

In addition to the murder charge, Scott was found guilty of aggravated child neglect and aggravated child abuse. He will face sentencing for these charges on July 30, with each offense carrying a penalty of $50,000.

Judge John Dugger Jr. will preside over the sentencing.

Scott was indicted by a grand jury on May 1, 2020, following an investigation into the death of Sophia Fields. Authorities were called to a residence on the 1600 block of Highway 70 Bypass on February 2, 2020, where they discovered the baby not breathing.
