GREENEVILLE, Tenn. (WJHL) — Residents gathered in Greeneville on Monday for a remembrance event marking one year since Hurricane Helene.

The Greene County Partnership reported that 114 residences in the area suffered damage during the storm. So far, they have managed to rebuild or repair 65 of these homes.

Jeff Taylor, president and CEO of Greene County Partnership, said there is still work to be done.

“The devastation impacted not only material possessions but also had an emotional toll,” Taylor mentioned. “We are continuing to collaborate closely. Out of adversity arises opportunity. Our chance was to unite as a community and play to our strengths, characteristic of Appalachia, by digging deep and tackling the challenges ahead.”

The life of Boone McCreary, who died while rescuing others, was honored at the event.

“He died heroically while attempting to save others,” Taylor remarked. “The ringing of the bell served as a poignant reminder of his tragic loss, signifying the fact that his legacy will endure indefinitely.”
