In a dramatic announcement back in 2018, former District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert declared, “We found the needle in the haystack, and it was right here in Sacramento,” revealing the arrest of the notorious Golden State Killer in a longstanding cold case.
Reflecting on her childhood, Schubert recalled being just 12 years old when Joseph James DeAngelo Jr. began his terrifying spree of rapes and murders. “Growing up in a family of seven, we lived only a mile or two from the heart of these crimes,” she shared. “It was a constant concern throughout my childhood and teenage years. Everyone in Sacramento at that time had a personal connection to the fear he spread.”
DeAngelo, a former law enforcement officer, wreaked havoc across California as a serial burglar and rapist, responsible for more than a dozen murders. It took investigators a decade after his final crime to connect the assaults in central and Northern California with the murders in Southern California.
