Has it been 17 years already? Get ready for screaming cicadas

SAVANNAH, Ga. () — Another cicada invasion is imminent.

Billions of the noisy insects are emerging from the ground in parts of the Eastern United States, including Georgia.

The screaming noise they make is part of their mating ritual.

If you’re curious about why cicadas emerge every 17 years, it relates to temperature conditions. These insects surface when the soil they dwell beneath—not hibernate within, as some might think—reaches 64 degrees. This temperature trigger explains why cicadas appear multiple times annually. Their 17-year life cycle is connected to the initial moment they burrow underground.
