Oldest Black Greek sorority hosts annual sisterhood retreat

SAVANNAH, Ga. () — On Saturday, the members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.’s Gamma Sigma Omega chapter of Savannah embodied their mission of “Service to all mankind” during their annual sisterhood retreat.

At the event held at Embassy Suites in Pooler, the sorority donated a $35,000 check to Savannah State University’s (SSU) Scholarship Endowment to support educational opportunities.

“Our students have a variety of needs,” stated Adrian L. Scott, vice-president of University Advancement and executive director of the SSU Foundation. “This donation will help bridge the gap for many students nearing graduation who face minor financial challenges as they prepare for the current or upcoming semesters.”

Mr. Scott also conveyed his enthusiasm about the positive impact the Gamma Sigma Omega Chapter’s contribution will have on students, aiding them in the pursuit of their educational dreams and aspirations.

“I hope they will reflect and recognize that the members of Gamma Sigma Omega Chapter were there to encourage and uplift them throughout their academic journey,” commented Nicole Williams, president of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., Gamma Sigma Omega Chapter. “We want them to know that we support them in whatever they need.”

The sorority is represented by more than 365,000 women worldwide and ‘s very own Tina Tyus-Shaw is a proud member.
