BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a man fleeing from a hit-and-run in a box truck Friday evening in Brevard County ran a red light, resulting in a fatal crash.
The latter crash occurred around 6:42 p.m. at the intersection of Hollywood and Eber boulevards, troopers said.
A crash report from the FHP states that the box truck’s driver, a 26-year-old man from Melbourne, was heading southbound on Hollywood Boulevard as a 67-year-old woman from Melbourne Beach drove a sedan eastbound on Eber Boulevard. Both were nearing the intersection. The Melbourne man ran a red light, allowing both vehicles to enter the intersection simultaneously, leading the box truck’s front to collide with the left side of the woman’s sedan, according to the report.
Troopers reported that the woman died at the hospital while the man was hospitalized with serious injuries, noting that charges are pending against him.
During the crash, troopers said the woman’s sedan hit another car that was stopped in the northbound left-turn lane on Hollywood Boulevard. Although the driver and passenger of that sedan experienced minor injuries, they were not hospitalized, as per the report.
The report further mentions three additional vehicles — a van, an SUV, and a third sedan — all stopped on northbound Hollywood Boulevard that suffered some impact from the crash. Fortunately, none of the occupants were injured.
West Melbourne police are investigating the hit-and-run crash, troopers said.
