Schools in Chatham County are gearing up to welcome families to open house events as they prepare for classes to resume on Monday. Among them, a Savannah middle school, Hubert Middle School, is experiencing a revitalized phase with new leadership and an invigorated focus on community involvement.

This school year, the Hubert Middle “Hornets” are setting a new course. Following a year marked by both academic hurdles and changes in administration, the school is eager to reunite families and introduce them to their new principal.

Today marks the beginning of the open house and community resource roundup. Over 20 community partners will be present, providing free food and school supplies. This year, the event features the introduction of Timothy Cox as the new principal. Cox is a seasoned educator with over three decades of experience, including 25 years served within the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System (SCCPSS).

In recent times, Hubert has faced academic struggles. In 2024, reading assessments indicated that over half of the students were reading below their grade level. The hope is that with this refreshed leadership, student performance might see positive changes.

“The selection of a leader and principal goes beyond just addressing school performance; it’s about having someone who brings comprehensive skills to the role,” said Raymond Barnes, the Chief of Schools for SCCPSS.

The back-to-school festivities begin at 3 p.m. in the school’s gymnasium. Then at 5 p.m., the activities will shift to the cafeteria, where families can meet teachers, tour classrooms, and engage with the school staff.

Whether you’re picking up school supplies, meeting teachers, or wanting to learn more about the new direction at Hubert Middle, all parents and families are encouraged to attend today.
