Illini take care of business in season opener, cruise past Western Illinois

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) – It’d be hard for Illinois fans to find much to complain about after Illini football’s season opener.

Bret Bielema’s team rolled past Western Illinois, winning 52-6.

Illinois made an early defensive stand, stopping Western on their initial drive, and quickly took control of the game. Senior QB Luke Altmyer connected with tight end Tanner Arkin for the team’s first touchdown of the season.

With touchdowns from Aidan Laughery and two more from Justin Bowick, a transfer from Ball State, along with a field goal by David Olano, Illinois surged to a commanding 31-0 lead by halftime.

The game was a showcase of local talent sporting orange and blue. Aidan Laughery from Gibson City amassed 101 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Hank Beatty from Rochester recorded 108 receiving yards and took a punt return 69 yards for a touchdown. Beatty’s punt return touchdown marked the first for the Illini since 2013.

Plus, Atwood’s Kaden Feagin ran for 74 yards and a touchdown.

Luke Altmyer finished the day 17-for-21 passing with 217 yards and three touchdowns.
