CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — The Illini will head into Big Ten play with a 3-0 record after a shutout win over Western Michigan.
No. 9 Illinois welcomed the Broncos to town in front of a sold-out crowd at Gies Memorial Stadium, the first game since Gies’s historic donation.
Illinois started off slowly, with their initial drive resulting in a field goal by David Olano. In the early part of the second quarter, Luke Altmyer connected with Hank Beatty in the endzone for a short touchdown, giving Illinois a 10-0 advantage going into halftime.
At the start of the third quarter, Kaden Feagin scored with a three-yard rush, surpassing 100 yards for the second time in his career. Luke Altmyer’s first rushing touchdown of the season extended Illinois’ lead to 24-0 as the fourth quarter began.
In the final quarter, Illinois picked up more momentum. Ashton Hollins celebrated his first touchdown of the season with a six-yard catch, while Ca’Lil Valentine sealed the deal with five minutes to go.
Boasting a 3-0 record, Illinois will travel to Bloomington for conference play against No. 22 Indiana on Saturday, Sept. 20, under the lights. The Hoosiers impressively defeated Indiana State in Week 3 without allowing any points.
