'Illinois is just home': Jacas grateful entering senior season in Champaign

It’s hard for Gabe Jacas to picture 2025 being his senior season with the Illini.

“You never really picture the final chapter, but being in this moment is pretty amazing,” Jacas remarked. “I’m eager to face Western Illinois and play against those guys.”

The Florida native set a high standard for himself from day one, learning from his brother Khaliq, who played at FIU.

“He prepared me for college-level challenges, with late-night sessions and genuine workouts, always pushing myself beyond others,” Gabe explained. “In high school, while others were relaxing and watching TV after practice, we hit the gym at 6 p.m. to put in extra work and hours.”

The hard work paid off with 35 tackles and four sacks as a freshman.

Despite early achievements that could have led Jacas away from Illinois, key relationships influenced his decision to stay rather than enter the portal or leave for the NFL.

“Illinois just feels like home,” Gabe stated. “It feels right, having been here since 2022, I couldn’t abandon these guys.” “We’ve laid our foundation here; these teammates are my family, and they mean the world to me.”

His return for 2025, alongside other key Illini seniors, was a strong selling point when adding talent via the transfer portal to the front seven.

“Witnessing Gabe Jacas’s success, we basically entered together; it’s his whole journey, and knowing he was returning along with many of the starting o-line and the quarterback, it was all very exciting for me,” commented Illinois transfer defensive lineman Tomiwa Durojaiye.

Jacas’s potential standout senior season could translate into millions in next year’s NFL draft. He has reached speeds over 20 miles per hour while shedding 15 lbs to boost his pass-rushing capabilities.

“That’s the position. where you’ve got to be fast, you’ve got to be explosive, you’ve got to change direction,” Jacas said. “It’s pretty cool to see myself in that 20 mile per hour club, and I’m just to see where I go.”
