Illinois Women's Golf Prepares for NCAA Regional Competition

URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) – Illinois women’s golf is getting ready for its NCAA regional.

The Illini are set to depart on Saturday for Columbus, Ohio. They will compete as the eighth seed out of 13 teams in a regional event hosted by Ohio State. This tournament will take place from May 5th to the 7th.

In preparation for the national tournament, the team is focusing on improving their putting and short-game skills. Both players and coaches are confident that a supportive team environment leads to positive outcomes.

“Our team is made up of a variety of perspectives, and what’s truly special is that we all go the extra mile to understand each other,” said Illinois senior Lexanne Halama.

Head coach Renee Slone says the team has grown a significant amount since the fall.

“There’s a stronger belief,” Slone said. “Belief in their abilities, what they’re capable of and just a stronger presence about them- just overall mentally stronger.”

The top five teams, plus the top finishing individual from a non-advancing team, will move on to NCAA Championships in California May 16-21.
