() The first hearing in the wrongful death lawsuit involving a former University of Missouri student who went missing on March 8, 2024, and was found dead two weeks later, was held Tuesday.

Riley Strain, 22, was in Nashville for a fraternity event with his Delta Chi fraternity brothers on March 8 when he went missing after he was asked to leave Luke Bryan’s bar, Luke 32 Bridge.

Strain’s body was discovered in the Cumberland River on March 22.

During their investigation, Nashville police spoke with members of Strain’s fraternity, which traveled by bus from the University of Missouri to Nashville. Strain’s fraternity brothers told investigators that the bus had a strictly enforced policy of alcohol not being allowed on the bus.

But students added that drinking was taking place on the bus and that Strain had at least five drinks, including two vodka shots and three beers, the report indicated.

The wrongful death lawsuit was filed in Boone County, Missouri, on March 21 by Strain’s parents and step-parents, totaling four plaintiffs.

The lawsuit, according to reporting from KOMU-TV, lists 22 defendants. The lawsuit alleged six counts, including vicarious liability against Delta Chi fraternity.
