CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Illinois running back Ca’lil Valentine is playing for more than just himself and his team in his sophomore season.
He often wears a necklace with a photo featuring him with his late grandmother.
On the back, it says you are the thinker that thinks the thoughts that make your dreams come true, a saying that still motivates him to be his best.
“I know she’s up there, proud of me right now, definitely looking down with a big smile,” Valentine expressed. “I can feel she’s really, really proud of me.” “I’ve seen growth in all areas of my game. I believe I’ve improved significantly in everything I do, be it film study or refining my routine, both on and off the field.”
“His approach to practice is key, treating game reps, maintaining tempo, and essentially playing the game on practice days like Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays helps him perform efficiently on Saturdays,” remarked Illinois assistant head coach and running backs coach Thad Ward. “He’s starting to recognize the areas he struggled with last year and is committed to enhancing those aspects.”
The athlete from Arizona has bolstered the Orange and Blue’s backfield, forming a strong trio with Kaden Feagin and Aidan Laughery, amassing 95 rushing yards and one touchdown over two games.
