The Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) is currently investigating two separate incidents involving inmate assaults on corrections officers. These incidents reportedly occurred in the past week at Wallens Ridge Correctional Center and Wallens Ridge State Prison, located in Big Stone Gap, Virginia.
According to a VADOC statement, the first attack happened on Saturday at the correctional center, where an inmate allegedly assaulted a corrections officer. The officer involved received medical treatment at an off-site facility, was subsequently released, and has since returned to duty.
The second incident reportedly occurred on Monday, involving another alleged inmate assault on a corrections officer who also needed medical attention off-site.
“The VADOC will not tolerate any violence towards our correctional team,” stated VADOC Director Chad Dotson. “Any inmate who even touches the uniform of one of our officers will encounter immediate and severe consequences, and we will seek legal action to the fullest extent. Ensuring the safety and security of our staff, inmates, and facilities remains our top priority.”
According to the VADOC, the incidents remain active investigations, and no further information will be released at this time.
