WHO 13 NEWS – Iowa veteran Joedy VanVelzen will summit Mount Katahdin in Maine today and complete his journey of hiking the Appalachian Trail.

He started this mission back in March, embarking on a journey of hiking 2,198 miles across 14 different states in just five months.

He’s been documenting the trek on social media and sharing photos of people he’s met, food he’s eaten, and beautiful scenery along the way.

VanVelzen applied to be a part of a team of veterans to hike the Appalachian Trail through Warrior Expeditions, a non-profit that provided clothing, shoes, supplies and support he needed to make the long-distance trek.

VanVelzen says he’s excited to see his wife and two daughters, who are flying out to Maine to meet him.
