JASPER COUNTY, S.C. — The Jasper County School System is set for a significant transformation. The newly appointed superintendent, along with state education officials, have communicated their ambitious objectives and benchmarks for the district’s future development during a meeting on Monday.

“Every choice we make, everything we undertake, is focused on investing in our children,” stated Dr. Laura Hickson, who has been appointed as the Interim Superintendent of Jasper County.

This was the guiding principle shared by Dr. Hickson, brought on board by the South Carolina State Education Board, during a strategic planning session organized by the school district.

Hickson replaces former Superintendent, Dr. Rechel Henderson, who’s departure caused a shaky year for the district.

“We aim to implement systems, processes, and financial procedures that ensure accountability and effective use of taxpayer funds,” Dr. Hickson explained when queried about the improvements she plans to introduce.

The three main priorities that Dr. Hickson has already identified are safety, quality education and rebuilding trust with schools and the community.

State Superintendent Ellen Weaver is actively participating in the transition within Jasper County School District. She emphasized that the state is committed to assisting the district in restoring the school system to meet established standards.

But they’re also looking to the community to understand deeper what the schools’ needs are.

“It’s crucial for us to comprehend the community’s goals, aspirations, and requirements so we can effectively collaborate and support efforts to achieve the high aspirations we have for Jasper County’s students,” Weaver remarked.

Dr. Hickson said she is working to get folks back involved in the district is through strategic planning meetings like Monday’s.

Through Q&A sessions and discussions, Hickson and Weaver are hoping to learn exactly what the community wants for its schools.

“We want to understand what our educators say we need, and we want to understand what our parents’ challenges are. And just as importantly, we want to ensure that we’re engaging with the business community here,” said Weaver.

Dr. Hickson said, “I know parents just want the best for their children. And once they start to see that, I really believe they’ll start to trust us.  They’ll start to want to be involved.  And we’re going to definitely keep them informed.”

Weaver said that it’s going to be a long road ahead before they can get to where they want to be.

Dr. Hickson said they’re going to continue monthly workshops and meetings to assess the district’s progress, as well as making sure transparency stays alive.
