JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) – Following the implementation of the new ordinance in Johnson City that forbids alcohol sales after 1 a.m., Michael Trivette, a local business owner, announced he will be closing New Beginnings Nightclub and putting it up for sale.

Having owned New Beginnings for 37 years, Trivette described the last call ordinance as “part of the nail in the coffin” for closing and selling his establishment, expressing disappointment that the city seemingly hasn’t considered how this impacts people’s livelihoods.

“We have a staff of about 30 or 40, and they are worried about their employment and how they’ll sustain their livelihood,” Trivette remarked. “Unfortunately, I feel the city hasn’t taken into account the number of jobs this ordinance has affected.”

He also mentioned that his age and health issues contributed to his decision, as he is not inclined to adapt his business to comply with the new city regulations, opting instead for retirement.

“This 1 a.m. restriction seems to target our industry, and I fear we might just be the first to succumb, with others likely to follow,” stated Trivette. “Our customer base mainly consists of people who finish work at restaurants or other places around 10 or 11 at night.”

Trivette noted that for both his business and others in the downtown area, nightlife is crucial for their earnings, with the hours from 1 to 3 a.m. being particularly lucrative.

New Beginnings’ building is currently for sale, but for the time being, Trivette said business will continue as usual until further notice.

Trivette hopes whoever potentially purchases the building will keep it as a nightclub and start over with fresh ideas that fit the city’s requirements.

“It’s maybe time for somebody younger to take my place, and I’m okay to pass the torch, but it was really heartwarming to feel needed, and I think everyone in their life needs to feel needed,” said Trivette.

Trivette encourages the community to still come out and support the business and have a good time right up until they announce their exact ending.
