TOLONO, Ill. (WCIA) — The Tolono Fire Protection District is looking for volunteers and is expanding their search for help. The district started a volunteer duty shift program.

It allows people from up to 25 miles outside town to apply to become a volunteer firefighter or other responder.

Assistant Fire Chief Kyle Hayden said they currently have some empty lockers and are branching out to fill them.

“I mean, it’s not just Tolono; it’s everywhere,” Hayden said. “Every volunteer fire agency has the same problems. We are looking at a different, unique way that we can try to get some more people to come to the door, that they already have fire service experience, may already be in the field, or have an interest in it. We’re obviously looking for people that are energetic and want to volunteer. We’d love to have them here.”

He says they’re looking for as many as they can get at this time. For more information on how apply head to
