DENVER (KDVR) — Police officers in Durango responded to a neighborhood to capture its most “unexpected repeat offender:” a local kangaroo who escaped from its home, again.

The Durango Police Department said officers had another run-in with Irwin, the viral kangaroo that escaped in Durango in October 2024.

Irwin made headlines a few months ago after Durango police had to “arrest” the red kangaroo after a high-speed, or “hopping speed” chase. The officers returned the pet to its owner, but a few months later, the escape artist was able to get away again.

On Monday, the officers had to wrangle the marsupial after he escaped again. The department released body camera footage of officers cornering Irwin, then picking him up and putting him in the back of a police car.

“We have the kangaroo detained,” one officer reported in the video.

The department dubbed Irwin “Durango’s most unexpected repeat offender,” but officers captured the kangaroo and “proved public safety doesn’t skip a hop—even with paws and a pouch.”

While residents of Durango are banned from owning several pets, including monkeys, tigers and bears, Colorado Parks and Wildlife said it’s legal to have a pet red kangaroo, depending on local laws and state and federal compliance.
