Bipartisan panel should tackle national debt: Kevin McCarthy

() Former U.S. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy suggests lawmakers could more easily make tough decisions on federal budget cuts if a bipartisan committee with an equal number of Democrats and Republicans worked the problem.

Government spending cuts and tax policy are at the heart of the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” that President Trump wants the GOP-controlled Congress to send him. The Congressional Budget Office estimates the measure as currently drafted would add trillions to the deficit, and now some Republicans are having second thoughts.

McCarthy joined “CUOMO” on Wednesday and said Congress could make greater headway on reducing the national debt if there were a select committee, like the evenly balanced panel he set up to study China.

The California Republican also referenced the commission known as “BRAC” that previously recommended U.S. military base closures on an up-or-down basis, meaning lawmakers couldn’t tinker with the list.

“Structure dictates behavior. So, if we change the structure on some of these problems, the behavior would be different,” McCarthy said.
