The King-Tisdell Cottage Foundation reached an important milestone as it celebrated 40 years of dedication to the preservation and promotion of Savannah’s African American heritage on Sunday, June 8.

The foundation hosted a New Board Member Reception and Open House at the historic Beach Institute African American Cultural Center.

Jerry Q. Greene, Sr., Chairman, addressed the audience about the foundation’s mission, emphasizing, “History shows us how individuals resembling us overcame similar challenges historically.”

A significant number of attendees were welcomed into the newly created “Friends of the Cottage”, a special group designed to aid in securing resources and expanding community involvement in support of the King-Tisdell Cottage Foundation.

“Friends of the Cottage” will serve as an important fundraising and advocacy arm for the foundation by supporting its preservation efforts, educational programming, and cultural initiatives, including exhibits like “The Art of Richard Law” and “Priced Out”, a collaborative project with Housing Savannah and SCAD Serve.

Guests were also treated to a guided tour of both the Beach Institute and King-Tisdell Cottage, allowing them to experience firsthand the rich legacy of African American entrepreneurship, education, and resilience.
