KINGSPORT, Tenn. (WJHL) — It was time to play ball this Saturday with the return of the Kingsport Miracle League.

Renee Ensor, who organizes programs for Kingsport Parks and Recreation, mentioned that the league has been active since around the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Parents and participants seem to love it because it offers something unique and inclusive,” Ensor explained.

This event is tailored specifically for children and adults with special needs. It features a game for those aged 17 and below, followed by another for those 18 and older.

Will Hobbs, who played in the game, said that he’s “been playing this league for 4 years, so yeah, I like it.”

Athletes like Hobbs had the opportunity to hit home runs and make impressive catches, just like their favorite professional players. Hobbs shared with News Channel 11 that his favorite player is third baseman Austin Riley from the Atlanta Braves.

Ensor added that the league is the perfect opportunity for the players to take part in the fun.

“We have one of the few baseball fields designed specifically for these players,” Ensor noted. “The field has a flat, pour-and-play surface without actual bases, which is perfect for participants who use wheelchairs. This special setup is why we host this league here for them.”

The Kingsport Parks and Recreation Department holds inclusive events year-round, with the Miracle League taking place in the fall and spring.
