In Knoxville, Tennessee, the Lady Vols basketball team has announced the dismissal of senior guard Ruby Whitehorn, as confirmed by the University of Tennessee Athletics department.
The decision follows Whitehorn’s recent charge of simple possession on Thursday morning, just hours after the team’s victory over Columbus State. Previously, Whitehorn had accepted a plea deal for misdemeanor trespassing and aggravated vandalism related to a domestic incident in August. Although she was temporarily suspended, she made a comeback to the team in September.
Head Coach Kim Caldwell stated, “Maintaining the high standards of this prestigious program is my duty. Given recent developments, Ruby has struggled to meet these expectations, leading me to the tough choice of dismissing her from the team. My support for Ruby remains strong, but preserving the esteemed reputation of the Lady Vols is essential.”
Whitehorn posted on Instagram saying she appreciated the support of her coaches and teammates. She thanked her friends, her family and Vol fans.
Whitehorn expressed remorse, saying, “I regret not living up to the legacy and values of the Lady Vols, and I apologize for that. Considering the events of this year, I am taking the time to focus on my mental well-being and personal improvement.”
