Leak caused wastewater to enter nearby storm drain, officials say
MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Melbourne Public Works and Utilities Department is working on fixing a sewer force main, which has led to the temporary closure of the westbound lanes on Sarno Road between Apollo Boulevard and Reynolds Drive.
This closure, expected to continue until 4 p.m. on Monday, is necessary for fixing a leak in a 16-inch wastewater force main. City officials reported that the leak had resulted in wastewater spilling into a nearby storm drain, which leads to the Eau Gallie River.
The leak has since been stopped, and crews expect to complete repairs by the end of the day.
City officials have not yet released information on the volume of sewage that entered the river.
Drivers are advised to plan alternate routes during the closure and expect delays in the area.
