Live: Texas Gov. Abbott announces funding for 'long-term' flooding relief

In Kerrville, Texas, Governor Greg Abbott is scheduled to deliver a speech at 1 p.m. on Thursday, announcing new funding aimed at supporting enduring recovery efforts after the July 4th floods.

In Kerr County, 117 people were killed in the flash floods, including 37 children. Two people are still missing.

This comes after an impactful session at the Capitol on Wednesday, where families of girls who tragically perished at Camp Mystic advocated before a Senate committee. They are pushing for legislation mandating enhanced safety protocols for camps statewide. The proposed measures include implementing emergency and evacuation procedures in cabins and preventing camps from being situated in flood-prone areas. The bill passed the committee stage and is moving forward to the full chamber for consideration.

In terms of aid funding, the Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country revealed last month that it successfully raised over $60 million for communities affected by the flooding. Meanwhile, the nonprofit organization Center Point Alliance for Progress has allocated $200,000 in grant money to assist flood victims.

Disaster declarations were signed in Kerr County almost immediately following the floods.
