SAVANNHA, Ga, () — The shooting in Minneapolis that resulted in the deaths of two children and injured many others is impacting communities nationwide.

The Diocese of Savannah says faith, community and time can help families navigate the fear and uncertainty that follow tragedies like this.

Deacon Kevin Knight, chancellor and chief operating officer of the Diocese of Savannah recalled his thoughts after hearing the news.

“The fear that must exist within the parents and that community, due to such a tragic event,” Knight expressed. “Additionally, the uncertainty of who is involved caused my heart to ache for them. I immediately prayed for peace to reach them. In such situations, it is the unknown that breeds chaos and fear.”

Knight said communities can begin to heal by staying connected with one another while keeping prayer at the forefront.

“As we know, through prayer and staying as a strong community, light will prevail over darkness and healing will come to that community,” he said.

He added that the Catholic faith offers a sense of unity in moments of tragedy.

“The wonderful aspect of the Catholic faith is that yesterday, every Catholic community worldwide, upon learning of the events in Minneapolis, was in prayer for the directly affected families,” he stated. “The thought and awareness of a global prayer effort in such situations is quite hopeful because it lessens the feeling of being alone.”

Knight also said professional guidance is available for Catholic schools in the Savannah area.

“We consistently offer pastoral care,” he mentioned. “We have priests and deacons available to assist in parish and school environments, as well as through the office of Catholic schools. Professionally trained school counselors are available as well.  Teachers can support students, providing them with any needed calmness in their lives, as we lack answers in the moment. All we can do is create a calm and peaceful setting to help divert focus from the chaos.”

The Diocese of Savannah released a statement in response to the tragedy on Wednesday: “Our Lady of Sorrows, intercede for those mourning the loss or injury of their loved ones at Annunciation Catholic School today. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace.”
