SAVANNAH, Ga. () — A mother’s mission to honor her daughter and demand justice brought a community together Tuesday in Yamacraw Village.

The “May Day for Desaray” walk was held in memory of ‘Desaray Gilliard’…  who was shot and killed three years ago.

her killer still hasn’t been caught.

The walk began at Yamacraw Square and ended at City Hall. It was a public stand against gun violence and a plea for answers.

Desaray’s mother told she wanted to use her grief for change.

“Unfortunately, the issue of gun violence is often overlooked,” stated Detraya Gilliard. “People tend to avoid discussing it; it’s not a subject for casual conversation because it’s quite divisive. However, as a parent who lost a child to gun violence, I couldn’t remain passive. Everyone processes grief in their own way, but for me, it is about keeping Desaray’s memory alive.”

Anyone with information on Desaray Gilliard’s case is urged to contact Crime Stoppers at 912-234-2020.
