CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — After nearly 20 years of community leadership, United Way of Champaign County’s President and CEO Sue Grey will retire.

Grey announced Thursday morning that she will step down from the role after the organization’s annual meeting in March, 2026.

She has spent her entire life in Champaign and became involved with United Way in 2006. Since that time, she’s dedicated herself to leaving a lasting impact on the community, uniting people and resources to effect meaningful change.

“Sue’s leadership has transformed United Way into a powerful, responsive force for good in Champaign County,” stated United Way Board Chair Lisa Rector in a news release. “Her influence on our organization and our community is beyond measure, and we are extremely thankful for her vision, compassion, and steadfast dedication.”

In addition to her role with United Way, Grey has devoted over 38 years to serving the Champaign County Community. Her previous roles include working with the Champaign Park District and serving as CEO of the Green Meadows Girl Scout Council. Grey spent five years on the Champaign Unit 4 School Board, two of which she was the Board President, participated in Leadership Illinois, and contributed to various local organizations, including the Executive Club of Champaign County, Chapter HI of PEO, and the University of Illinois’ Board of Visitors for Applied Health Sciences.

Following Grey’s retirement, a celebration will take place to honor her career sometime in the spring next year, with more details to be announced at a later time.

“This work has been one of the greatest joys of my life,” Grey said. “I’m proud of what we’ve built together, and I know the mission will continue to grow in impact. United Way is in strong hands, and the future is bright for our community.”

As for who will step into the role of President and CEO next — that process has already started, and anyone interested can send a cover letter and resume to Lisa Rector at lisa@rectorteam.com.
