Macon Co. tire drive cuts down mosquito presence

DECATUR, Ill. (WCIA) — The Macon County Mosquito Abatement District held its annual tire drive Friday.

This year’s drive collected over 800 tires to help reduce areas where mosquitoes can breed. Mosquitoes are attracted to warm, dark places with standing water, so discarded tires make perfect habitats for them.

Although some locals participate just to dispose of tires without any cost, the district director noted that their actions contribute to public welfare, whether they are aware of it or not.

“Public health initiatives require collective effort,” stated director Jason Probus. “It’s beneficial to inspect your own yard after a rainfall if possible.”

Probus invites anyone in his district to call his office if they spot any wells of stagnant water. His district can test for the presence of mosquitoes and exterminate them if needed.
