Staff report
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Michael Avery Hooks, 33, was arrested yesterday after allegedly pointing a shotgun at his girlfriend and threatening to kill her and her brother.
At about 9:45 p.m. on April 4, Gainesville Police Department officers responded to a home in Lincoln Estates, where the victim said she and Hooks had been arguing and he grabbed her by her arms and pushed her around the hallway. She said he picked up a brown and black shotgun, pointed it at her, and said, “I’ll kill you and your brother.”
Another person in the home reportedly told officers that she saw Hooks pointing a “long gun” at his girlfriend and was afraid he would shoot her, so she called 911. While she was on the phone with 911, she said she heard Hooks yell, “I’ll kill you and your brother.”
Officers reported finding a shotgun in the laundry room that matched the description provided by the victim.
Post Miranda, Hooks reportedly said he never had a gun and never put his hands on the victim; he said the others in the home were “lying on him.”
Hooks has been charged with domestic aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and domestic battery. He has five felony convictions (one violent, one sexual) and 11 misdemeanor convictions (three violent); he has served two state prison sentences and was released in October 2024 after serving a five-year sentence for attempted molestation of a minor. He is a registered sexual offender.
Judge Mitchell Bishop ordered him held without bail pending a hearing on a motion from the State Attorney’s office to hold him without bail until trial.
