CHICAGO A man was walking on a sidewalk on the Near West Side late Tuesday night when five gunmen got out of a vehicle and opened fire, killing him, according to Chicago police.

The man, who police say was approximately 20 years old, was walking on the sidewalk in the 1000 block of West 14th Street, near the University of Illinois Chicago campus, just before 11:30 p.m.

According to police, a dark-colored SUV rolled up to the man and five offenders got out. All five began shooting at the man, police say, hitting him several times in the body, then got back in the SUV and drove off.

The victim was treated by the Chicago Fire Department and taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His identity has not yet been released. A UIC spokesperson said the victim was not affiliated with the school and that the shooting occurred off campus.

According to a notification distributed to the UIC community, UIC police arrived on scene and observed the offenders’ SUV fleeing the area, describing it as a black Infinity with no license plate, last seen entering the southbound I-90/94 expressway from South Canalport Avenue.

Chicago police say nobody is in custody, and Area Three detectives are investigating.
