Man slashed by box cutter in nighttime attack outside Tampa laundromat: police

A man in his mid-20s was hospitalized Tuesday night following an incident involving a box cutter outside a Tampa laundromat, according to local police.

At about 10 p.m., Darick Singleton, 60, approached the younger man in the laundromat’s parking lot on North 40th Street, a Tampa Police Department representative reported.

The authorities indicated that the two men were acquainted prior to the altercation. Singleton alleged that the younger man owed him money from earlier that day. When the man refused to comply with Singleton’s demand, Singleton reportedly pursued him with a box cutter.

Singleton swung the box cutter multiple times, slashing the man at least twice, authorities said.

First responders took the man to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. Police said his injuries were non-life-threatening.

Singleton took off on foot but was quickly found by officers and placed under arrest, according to the police department.

Singleton was subsequently taken into custody and charged with aggravated battery causing great bodily harm or using a deadly weapon, robbery, and failing to appear for an earlier court appointment.
