The Mattoon City Council is set to make a decision Tuesday night regarding a special use permit for a cannabis dispensary in Mattoon.

Should the council approve the permit for TC AppliCo, LLC, a Justice Cannabis Co. dispensary would be established at 511 Lake Land Boulevard, which was previously the First National Bank. The dispensary application acknowledges the previous bank site as an “adequate location.”

City records indicate that the proposed dispensary location complies with the necessary distance regulations from schools, preschools, and daycare centers. Additionally, it meets the city’s parking requirements.

Mattoon added that the business will generate tax revenue for the city, and also add 18 full-time and four part-time jobs to the area.

The Planning and Zoning Commission unanimously voted to approve the special use permit April 22. The Mattoon City Council will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

In 2022, the city council denied a permit request filed by TC AppliCo, LLC for a dispensary in the former Long John Silver’s near Charleston Avenue and 12th Street. At the time, some council members said they were worried because there were after-school programs nearby. Another council member didn’t think it would bring in enough money. The city council voted 3-2 against the dispensary.
