As outlined in a press release from the McIntosh County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO), these issues were identified in the course of a standard review of the department’s expenditures and contracts.

The examination revealed that more than $130,000 in state taxes were wrongly applied to government fuel purchases for the years 2022, 2023, and 2024, even though Georgia law exempts government agencies from such taxes.

“The funds have been reimbursed and will be returned to the county’s general fund or reallocated to benefit public safety operation,” the release reads.

“This particular incident highlights the importance of transparency and accountability in all aspects of our operations,” said the sheriff.
