MOUNTAIN CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — Mountain City celebrated a century of fiddling on Saturday.

The Mountain City Fiddlers Convention marked a century-long celebration of old-time music and bluegrass traditions in Mountain City. More than 700 attendees gathered in Johnson County to enjoy the genuine tunes.

The convention included live performances, album launches, friendly competitions, and complimentary workshops on the fiddle, banjo, and clogging — three fundamental elements of Appalachian culture. Attendees also got a first glimpse of the new Tim White Mural.

Founder of the Mountain City Fiddlers Convention, Mary Rachel Nalley Norris, noted that musicians internationally travel to Mountain City to present their skills. The previous year’s “Grand Prize Fiddler” hailed from the Netherlands.

“This year, we’ve got people from Israel here,” she stated. “We’ve got people from everywhere. And, it’s really nice to have people from overseas coming here to want to compete at this little event now, hopefully turning bigger.”

The Kody Norris Show presented the convention.
