EL PASO, Texas (Border Report) – On Thursday, a unit from the Mexican National Guard made an intriguing discovery near the city of Juarez. They stumbled upon a suspicious underground structure leading to the Rio Grande’s banks.

This tunnel-like formation was found just over 100 yards away from a previously unearthed smugglers’ tunnel, uncovered by U.S. authorities on January 9, 2025. The earlier tunnel was believed to facilitate the illegal transport of drugs and “high value” migrants.

The recent discovery was pinpointed at an access point situated on the edge of Juan Pablo II Boulevard in Juarez. The exit point was located on the Mexican side of the river levee.

Following a comprehensive investigation, Mexican authorities informed Border Report’s news partner, ProVideo, that the newly found structure turned out to be an old storm drainage pipe. After this conclusion, both soldiers and civilian officials departed the scene, leaving it unclear whether they plan to seal the structure.

The U.S. Border Patrol, when contacted by Border Report, referred to the discovery as a “false alarm” concerning a new smuggling tunnel.
