New atomic bomb themed bar opening on Tybee

TYBEE ISLAND, Ga. () – Tybee Island is introducing a new cocktail bar with a nod to the beach’s unique history.

In 1958, a thermal nuclear weapon was accidentally dropped off the coast of Tybee when an F-86 fighter jet collided with a B-47 bomber.

Following the collision, a recovery mission was launched, but nothing was found despite the explosive having a power equivalent to 3.8 million tons of TNT.

The U.S. Airforce has insisted that Tybee is safe from danger since it’s believed the bomb was created without a trigger.

The newly developed site is owned by Stu Putnam, who also possesses King Neptune and The Window. Putnam’s son, Wes, will be overseeing the 1950s-themed venture.

The bar will include lava lamps, bright retro memorabilia and atom shaped lamps, all in atomic bomb fashion.

“As you enter, you’ll notice a genuine military practice bomb from the ’50s hanging up. We also have a classic image of a couple enjoying a cocktail on the beach with an atomic explosion in the backdrop, emphasizing our identity as a cocktail bar,” remarked Wes.

The bar will open to the public Oct. 9. From Oct. 9 onward, they’ll be open Thursday-Saturday evenings.
