New Developments Emerge in Campustown Weekend Shooting Incident

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – A weekend shooting on the University of Illinois campus has left one man in serious but stable condition. Authorities have arrested 18-year-old Decoven Stephens of Urbana in connection with the incident, according to the University of Illinois Police Department.

Stephens was apprehended at his residence on Monday morning. Lead investigator, Ryan Snow, reported that the firearm believed to be used in the crime was retrieved during the arrest. The gun, illegally possessed and used by Stephens, had its serial numbers tampered with, adding to the list of charges against him.

The shooting occurred in the early hours of Saturday, near the intersection of Green and Fifth Streets. Police responded quickly to reports of gunfire and discovered a male victim with gunshot wounds who was then transported to the hospital for treatment.

Snow highlighted the role of technology in the investigation, noting that surveillance cameras captured the incident as it unfolded. Additionally, dash cam footage from a passing vehicle provided crucial evidence. The police also encouraged the public to submit information and videos anonymously, which resulted in a substantial number of helpful tips for the University of Illinois Police Department.

Snow added that the relationship with the public is the most important part of solving crimes like this.

“We have cameras, and we have lots of different resources open for our use as far as solving crimes. But very seriously, without the input from the public, them allowing us to see it from their perspective, their stories, that’s what helped solve this case,” Snow said. “If you’re going to commit a crime, the University of Illinois campus is not the place to do it. This case specifically shows that we have a lot of resources, and we’re going to use every single one of them to try to keep everybody safe.”

Snow also shared that they are still investigating this case.
